"I Am Squid" posted April 22, 2004 at 12:31 AM

You are what you eat. I am squid. I find it almost impossible lately to not order squid when I see it on a menu. I ate two amazing squid dishes in the last couple of days. At Pepolino (Tuscan Italian, in Tribeca) I ate an amazing warm broiled squid and potato salad. It was so buttery, fishy, and warm. Flavored with fresh parsley. The squid was so tender--almost the consistency of crab meat. It was a perfect spring lunch dish.

Last night I ate at New Green Bo (Chinese, in Chinatown--discovered when my favorite Chinatown joint, Sun Lok Key, closed. Had to call Adrienne in Columbus, who was with me for the discovery, to remember the exact name!). I had salt & pepper squid. The squid is heavily salted, then fried in vegetable oil with hot green peppers. My mouth is watering just thinking about it now. Eaten with rice, followed by hot tea, and ginger flavored ice cream from the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory across the street.
