"We Made It Through The Years" posted November 3, 2004 at 04:07 PM

This election has left me typeless. Instead of bellowing out my complaints, I'm handing this space over to a very special guest: Mom. My mother's sense of historical perspective was just the shot in the arm I needed. Sharing the comfort I take in her support and intelligence is the best thing I can offer to anyone reading this site today. DMZ

Marie Zaza writes:
David, I hope you are feeling better after a long disappointing night of election returns. Here are some of my recollections of other elections that were equally disappointing. When Dad and I were young adults we had high hopes for the future, two children, lots of bills--and every four years we thought and believed that a new Democratic president could somehow make our lives just a little better so that we could realize some of our dreams. We were looking to our leaders to do more for the poor and us, the near poor, and end a senseless war. In 1968 & 1972 the Democratic losses were painful, we were angry and not hopeful for our family's future. We worried all the time about our own children, and about our country's young men who were being drafted and sent to fight for a war that never seemed to have an end. But somehow the world keeps spinning and we kept pushing ahead a little at a time. We made it through the years even with the most corrupt president, and we will make it through with this president!

Democrats need to start over and they need a national strategy. The "blue state strategy" doesn't work, and in my opinion never will. Why should any national candidate write off most of the country and expect to win? It just leaves too much to chance. It seems that we are at the same place as in the past, but with new problems to overcome. Hopefully, there will be someone in the near future who will reach national prominence and change the direction of America. We can hope and take care of each other until that happens. Mom
