"Best Op-Ed I've Read in a Long While" posted November 14, 2005 at 03:44 PM

Former President Jimmy Carter writes an Op-Ed for The Los Angeles Times today. This man seems incapable of saying anything that isn't absolutely true. His voice, full of honesty, integrity, and authority, today joins the growing chorus who decry the historically stupid, phenomenally dangerous gang of of thugs who currently lead our country.

Carter hits them hard on specific policies:

On foreign policy:
"These revolutionary policies have been orchestrated by those who believe that our nation's tremendous power and influence should not be internationally constrained. Even with our troops involved in combat and America facing the threat of additional terrorist attacks, our declaration of "You are either with us or against us!" has replaced the forming of alliances based on a clear comprehension of mutual interests, including the threat of terrorism."

On Iraq:
"Another disturbing realization is that, unlike during other times of national crisis, the burden of conflict is now concentrated exclusively on the few heroic men and women sent back repeatedly to fight in the quagmire of Iraq. The rest of our nation has not been asked to make any sacrifice, and every effort has been made to conceal or minimize public awareness of casualties."

On the environment:
"Protection of the environment has fallen by the wayside because of government subservience to political pressure from the oil industry and other powerful lobbying groups. The last five years have brought continued lowering of pollution standards at home and almost universal condemnation of our nation's global environmental policies."

On religious fundamentalism:
"I am extremely concerned by a fundamentalist shift in many houses of worship and in government, as church and state have become increasingly intertwined in ways previously thought unimaginable." (Don't forget that Carter himself is a born-again Christian).

Carter's breaking with the long-standing tradition of former presidents refraining from criticizing later administrations, but clearly he believes this case to be dangerously important. I only hope that by the time the American people wake up and get these bozos out of office that the damage will still be somewhat undoable.

Note: The following is my part in a GOOGLE BOMB: You know that asshole Bill O'Reilly? Did you know that he's a terrorist sympathizer? He'd like Al Queda to attack San Francisco. Personally, I hope Al Queda comes to his house, drags him kicking and screaming to a waiting car, and the next anyone ever sees of him he's wandering around naked on the streets of Baghdad. What do you think would happen to him?
